How to control and prevent internal cracking (honeycomb cracking) in wood

Internal wood cracking occurs inside the wood, cracking along the wood rays, such as honeycomb, also called honeycomb cracking. There are no cracks on the surface, only sawing can be found. But it is usually accompanied by uneven appearance or significant shrinkage, or charring, or lighter weight. This is characteristic of over-drying.Internal cracks generally occur in the late drying period, which is caused by the severe surface hardening and the severe drying conditions in the later period, resulting in excessive internal tensile stress. Thick sawn timber, especially tree species with high basic density, thick wood ray, or hard wood, such as oak, ash, kemu, castanopsis, sweetgum, Liuan and other hard broad-leaved trees, are more prone to internal ruptures. Internal cracking is a serious drying defect, which has extremely adverse effects on the strength, material, processing and product quality of wood, and is generally not allowed to occur. The way to prevent it is to carry out intermediate treatment in the middle and later stages of kiln drying to relieve surface hardening. For thicker sawn timber, especially hard hardwood, the post-drying temperature should not be too high.
