Thermal modification of wood
The thermal modification of wood, also known as carbonization treatment, is the formation of carbonized wood by long-term pyrolysis treatment of wood with overheated steam at 160C~240C. Compared with chemical modification technology, thermal modification process and equipment are simpler, environmentally friendly, and have significant economic benefits. It has been widely used both domestically and internationally.
After heat modification technology treatment, the wood has a consistent color both inside and outside, high dimensional stability, moisture-proof and corrosion-resistant properties, is easy to store, and will not easily crack. There are four commonly used thermal modification processes in China:
1. Use a blowtorch or open flame to barbecue wood, causing its surface to carbonize to a burnt yellow or black color. Before and after wood carbonization, a steel wire brush can be used to brush off the early wood on the surface, leaving behind dark late wood and enhancing the three-dimensional texture.
2. Using a simple natural circulation heating tank to heat wood, this device is often modified from anti-corrosion tanks, resulting in severe uneven carbonization of wood.
3. Place a layer of wood veneer between the hot pressing plates of the press and carbonize it at high temperature. During the heating process, it is necessary to open the hot pressing plate in a timely manner to dry and shrink the thin wood to avoid cracking. In addition, attention should also be paid to preventing the thin wood from catching fire due to high temperature and contact with air.
4. In professionally designed treatment kilns or tanks, the treatment is carried out according to the predetermined process, using superheated steam as the protective gas.
