Two categories of drying kilns
A building or metal container specially used for drying wood that can adjust and control temperature, humidity and air flow speed according to process requirements. There are two categories: continuous drying kiln and periodic drying kiln.
It is tunnel-shaped, generally more than 30 meters in length, and can hold many piles of wood along the longitudinal direction. During the drying process, the material pile is moved forward regularly. While the wet wood pile is loaded into the wet end, the dry wood pile is unloaded from the dry end. Therefore, it is also called a forward drying kiln. The drying operation is carried out continuously. The wet end of this kiln has low temperature and high humidity, the dry end has high temperature and low humidity, and the drying medium changes in stages. Hot moist air can be used as the drying medium, or furnace gas can be used as the drying medium. It can be designed as a forced circulation kiln with ventilation device, or as a natural circulation kiln without ventilation device. It is usually used to dry coniferous wood sheets in large batches and small specifications.
It is in the shape of divided chambers, also called divided chamber drying kiln. The drying operation is carried out in cycles, that is, the kiln is loaded at one time and discharged from the kiln at one time after drying. It can be designed as a single-track kiln or a double-track kiln, with 1 to 3 wood piles installed longitudinally. The drying medium can use hot humid air, superheated steam or furnace gas. It can also be designed as a natural circulation kiln or a forced circulation kiln. The former does not have a fan, and the drying medium forms a natural convection cycle due to severe changes in temperature around and inside the pile. The air flow speed is low and the drying cycle is long; the latter is equipped with a fan, forcing the drying medium to move at a speed of more than 1.5 m/s. The flow rate passes transversely through the wood pile, which accelerates the drying speed. The periodic drying kiln is flexible to use and easy to operate. Most modern wood drying kilns are periodic forced circulation kilns.
